Since 2012, CfBT Brunei has been leading a CLIL-based pilot project in a small number of primary schools. The project involves the professional training and development of English-medium subject teachers in CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) pedagogy and practice through a dedicated and distinct professional development and support programme sensitive to the local educational context and grounded in Brunei and school-specific needs.
The CLIL project focusses extensively on the necessity for all subject teachers to recognise the importance of, and their growth in, being both language and literacy teachers in addition to being the traditional conveyers of content knowledge. Critically, the project also identifies and underscores the role of the learner which, together with strategic CLIL delivery, drives the development and improvement of student language capabilities and content knowledge.
The core goal is to raise student achievement in English language and literacy across English-medium core subjects. This is achieved through the design and delivery of professional training to core subject teachers, supporting them to develop and extend their classroom knowledge and best practice methodology in the delivery of content, language and literacy. Central to the professional training is the promotion of local solutions to collaborative joint working practices. By strengthening the teaching in and across subjects, we strengthen the learning taking place.
